October 16, 2026: Oman has overtaken the United States to become India’s largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in September, marking a significant shift in the country’s energy imports amid disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz caused by the ongoing West Asia conflict.
The reshuffle comes as European buyers increasingly turn to American LNG, while India looks to diversify its supplies to offset disruptions to traditional sources. Despite the challenges and elevated international prices, India’s overall LNG imports have remained resilient .
According to tanker-tracking data from commodity market analytics firm Kpler, India’s LNG imports from Oman increased 11.6 per cent month-on-month to 0.59 million tonnes in September.
Shipments from the US, meanwhile, declined 60.7 per cent from August to 0.34 million tonnes, pushing it to third place.
Nigeria occupied the second position despite a 35.1 per cent decline in supplies to 0.35 million tonnes. LNG imports from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) rose 27.3 per cent to 0.31 million tonnes.
