October 17, 2026: The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved the Indian Gas Exchange’s (IGX) proposal to introduce a Regasification Capacity Booking Platform, aimed at improving transparency and facilitating access to unutilised capacity at liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals.
The voluntary platform will provide a centralised mechanism for listing and booking available regasification capacity, enabling market participants to identify capacity and access it according to their requirements. The initiative is expected to improve the utilisation of existing LNG infrastructure and support the growth of gas markets.
The move is also expected to gain support from PNGRB’s earlier decision to reduce pipeline tariff zones to two, which could make LNG terminals located farther from consumption centres more competitive for gas buyers.
How will the LNG regasification booking platform work?
Under the proposed arrangement, LNG terminal operators and capacity holders will be able to list their unutilised regasification capacity on the IGX platform. Prospective buyers will be able to identify and book available capacity according to their requirements. Buyers will also have the option to indicate their capacity requirements, helping improve visibility of both available capacity and market demand.
IGX will act as a facilitator for capacity booking. However, contractual negotiations, payment settlements and risk management will continue to be handled directly by buyers and sellers under their respective agreements. Participation in the platform will be entirely voluntary.
