October 17, 2026: Advanced alkaline electrolysis and renewable power now produce green hydrogen for direct use in refinery operations.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has won the Green Hydrogen Project of the Year - India award at the Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2026 for its pioneering 5 MW Green Hydrogen Plant at Bina Refinery, Madhya Pradesh. The project aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, contributes to the country's Net Zero 2070 vision, and supports BPCL's commitment to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040.
BPCL has successfully commissioned the 5 MW Green Hydrogen Plant, one of the largest refinery-integrated green hydrogen facilities in India, marking a significant milestone in the company's energy transition journey. Executed within just 15 months, the project utilises advanced alkaline water electrolysis technology to produce 2.15 MT of green hydrogen per day at an energy consumption of 50.75 kWh/kg.
The facility is equipped with two state-of-the-art alkaline electrolysers and an advanced purification system capable of delivering hydrogen with a purity of 99.999%. Powered entirely by renewable energy, the plant will serve as an important platform for demonstrating the technical viability of green hydrogen integration within refinery operations and demonstrating its potential for broader adoption in the refining sector. The project enables the direct replacement of conventionally produced grey hydrogen with green hydrogen, resulting in an estimated reduction of approximately 9,000 MT of CO2 emissions annually. The commissioning of the plant reflects BPCL's commitment to sustainable growth and operational excellence.
