October 3, 2026: Confusion continues to surround the selection of the next Chairman and Managing Director of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), with conflicting accounts emerging about the outcome of the search-cum-selection process.
While sources had indicated that three candidates were shortlisted after two lengthy rounds of interviews and their names forwarded for vigilance clearance, fresh media reports now suggest that the selection panel could not find a suitable candidate among those who appeared for the interviews.
The conflicting accounts have made the selection process increasingly difficult to decipher. If the latest reports are accurate, the exercise may have to be revisited, potentially extending uncertainty over the appointment of the head of India’s largest oil and gas producer.
From shortlisting to rejection?
Some media reports published on October 1 said the search panel constituted by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas had reportedly failed to identify a suitable candidate for the ONGC CMD post. The reports cited sources familiar with the process but did not provide an official confirmation from the Ministry.
This account differs sharply from the earlier information that three candidates had emerged from the interview rounds and that their names had been sent for vigilance clearance.
The key question is whether the reported shortlisting and vigilance-clearance process had reached a formal stage or whether the latest reports reflect a subsequent decision by the selection authorities. No public clarification has yet resolved the discrepancy.
